Seasonal Cards: A Birthday in December

When is your birthday? Is it around a holiday? I have a birthday in December that’s pretty close to Christmas and I love to get holiday-themed birthday cards. Heck, even my cake usually has poinsettias on it!

Today’s card features the Special Month’s Glimmer Hot Foil Plate set from Spellbinders. It includes all of the months of the year, perfect for a calendar. Or to customize a card sentiment in case you have a friend with a name like April, June, or January. 🙂

Prepping the Pieces

I made the sentiment strip first by silver foiling the ‘happy’ and ‘birthday’ separately. Then, I trimmed each of them into a 3/8″ strip separately to adjust the spacing.

These sentiments come from the February ’19 Glimmer Kit of the Month Club. If you aren’t subscribed yet, you’re missing some lovely Glimmer sets!

The next step was to stamp the poinsettias (Modern Poinsettia from Altenew) along the top of the card. Blackout Ink from Inkon3 is what I chose because that ink is Copic-safe.

I masked each flower with Masking Magic paper from Gina K after I stamped them. The following step is ink blending with a super lovely green ink called Mardi Gras from Catherine Pooler.

I used a blending brush from Picket Fence Studios to blend the card front all the way to the bottom. That helped me create an ombré look.

Next, I peeled up the masking paper and colored the stripes on the poinsettias with R22, R24, and R29. Once that was done, I dabbed the flower centers and a bunch of itty-bitty dots all over the card with some Aleene’s Tacky Glue. Then, I sprinkled Sizzix Silver glitter over it.

I love that glitter – it’s super fine and so sparkly! And probably the only loose glitter you’ll catch me using.

After drying everything, I attached my sentiment strip with foam squares and flagged the ends. Then, I added a big fluffy bow right underneath the month. Isn’t it bright and cheery?!
